US beaten by Uruguay

Uruguay snatched an historic 10-9 victory over the United States to keep alive their World Cup hopes. The Teros' first-ever victory over America means that the winner of next Saturday's Uruguay-Chile match in Montevideo will claim second place in the Americas qualifying pool and a trip to the 2003 World Cup in Australia.

Barring a draw, the United States will finish third based on a tie-break formula and go into a special repechage play-off series. In Santiago, Canada beat Chile 29-11 to improve their record to 5-1 and clinch first place in the Americas hemisphere group.
