Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio has expressed his delight at returning to the game after being out for eight months with a serious knee injury. Dallaglio came on as a sub for his club Wasps yesterday but he refused to get carried away with his chances of making a swift return to the England set-up.

“I am glad the game is out of the way because of the expectations riding on it. It’s great to be back and now I can at least go back home and call myself a rugby player again. The criteria for getting picked for England is to play well week in, week out and the way I see it is that the selectors and myself need a bit more time on that one.

“It has been suggested that I might even captain any prospective England tour this summer. My view is simply that I want to get some rugby on board, and, if possible, just get myself in the tour party,” Dallaglio wrote in his column for the Sunday Times newspaper.
