Ireland captain Keith Wood is hoping to return for his country’s Six Nations tie against Italy in three weeks time. Woods has missed all of the Six Nations campaign so far with a calf injury and although he’s reluctant to put a specific date on his return, he is optimistic of lining out against the Italians.
“Coming back for Italy would be a reasonable aim. The calf has been a problem and there are two components now, the injury and then fitness. If it had cleared up reasonably quickly, there wouldn’t have been much of a problem with the fitness aspect, but now I will have to work at it,” said Wood.
The Irish hooker added that while he was looking forward to getting back into the team, he wasn’t expecting to be an automatic selection when he is eventually passed fit. “There are no automatic places in international rugby,” he insisted.
