Garryowen got their season off to a winning start with a 15-27 victory over Young Munster in the AIL Division One at Clifford Park this afternoon. Early pressure from Garryowen yielded the opening score after two minutes when out-half Billy Tracy landed a penalty from well inside the 22. Garryowen’s pressure continued when John O’Sullivan went over for a try with Tracy adding the conversion after 27 minutes. Just before half-time, the home-side landed two penalties to cut the deficit to 6 –10 at the break.
At the restart, Tracy scored a penalty to extend Garryowen’s lead, but out-half Mick Lynch landed two penalties for Young Munster to leave just a single point between the two teams. Garryowen increased their lead again to 20-12 with a converted try eight minutes into second half but two minutes later Mike Lynch scored his fifth penalty of the game to cut the deficit down to five points. Garryowen responded immediately, however, with hooker Pat Humphreys scoring their third try of the match. Tracy converted to secure a deserved victory for Garryowen.
