Gibbs announces his retirement

Scott Gibbs has today announced his immediate retirement from international rugby. The Lions and Welsh centre has decided to hang up his boots after a ten-year Test career during which he won 53 caps for his country and was involved in the Lions tours of New Zealand in 1993, South Africa four years later and again this year to Australia after being drafted in as a late replacement.

"I have retired from international rugby," he confirmed today at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium's launch of the 2001-02 Heineken Cup competition. "I will be making a full statement, probably early next week," he added. However, Gibbs will continue to play for his club Swansea.
