Australia defeat New Zealand in Tri-Nations

Australia retained the Bledisloe Cup and recorded their first Tri-Nations win with a 23-15 victory over New Zealand.

Matthew Burke scored 18 of the Wallabies' total haul, including one try, three penalty goals and two conversions. The victory was sealed with a penalty try 14 minutes from time after winger Joe Roff was bundled into touch without the ball by All Black Number 8 Ron Cribb.

The victory enabled the Australians to finally exorcise the ghost of Carisbrook, winning there for the first time in thirteen attempts.

The match, which gave new coach Eddie Jones his first win, also marked the last overseas game for Australian Captain John Eales before his retirement.
