Australia – Lions: player by player ratings

AUSTRALIA

Matt Burke: Justified his recall with a superb 25-point performance, comprising a try, six penalties and a conversion. 8

Andrew Walker: Had little chance to make an impact, but looked more relaxed without the pressures of goalkicking. Suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone, though. 6

Daniel Herbert: Was far more effective than during the first Test, launching some trademark powerful bursts and linking effectively with Nathan Grey. 7

Nathan Grey: Made some crunching tackles as he relished the close-quarter physical combat, never allowing the Lions centres headway. 8

Joe Roff: Turned the game on its head by scoring two tries in seven second-half minutes, underling his world-class finishing skills. 9

Stephen Larkham: Was transformed following an error-strewn contribution in Brisbane, running the show after half-time as he mixed his running and kicking game superbly. 8

George Gregan: Had time and space behind a Wallabies pack that gave him an abundance of ball, and his passes fired effectively. 8

Nick Stiles: After a difficult start to his Test career, he will gain huge confidence from this result ahead of next Saturday's series decider. 6

Michael Foley: Replaced the injured Jeremy Paul, and added a physical edge to the Wallabies front-five. His experience was critical. 7

Rod Moore: Made a far greater impact than injured tighthead Glenn Panoho managed in Brisbane last weekend, and will undoubtedly keep his place. 7

David Giffin: Had an impressive game at lineout time, disrupting the Martin Johnson/Danny Grewcock partnership on occasions. 7

John Eales: Celebrated his 50th Test as Wallabies skipper with a commanding contribution in all departments. Particularly effective during the second-half. 8

Owen Finegan: Physical and robust, he created Burke's try through a great piece of skill - a one-handed pass under pressure to the full-back. 8

George Smith: Got around the field in dynamic fashion, often arriving at the breakdown first and then clearing possession away. 8

Toutai Kefu: Not as prominent as he had been in Brisbane seven days earlier, but still shone in the areas that mattered. 7

LIONS

Matt Perry: Erratic with his kicking out of hand, and got in to one terrible defensive muddle. Was replaced by Iain Balshaw on 49 minutes. 5

Dafydd James: Made a brilliant break early on, but failed to spot support runners either side of him. Outplayed by two-try Wallabies hero Joe Roff. 5

Brian O'Driscoll: Conjured up one moment of first-half magic through a kick, chase and catch, yet was well marked by Australia's midfield. 7

Rob Henderson: Given a thorough a defensive test, and did not remotely scale the heights of his display in Brisbane seven days ago. 6

Jason Robinson: The Wallabies closed down his space well, giving him little room to operate in, but he never stopped trying. 6

Jonny Wilkinson: Kicked just three from six, which was a poor 50% success rate, and threw out the wild pass that Joe Roff intercepted just after half-time. Stretchered off near the end with a leg injury. 5

Rob Howley: Another gritty effort from the Welshman, but played second fiddle to George Gregan on this occasion. 6

Tom Smith: Gutsy effort from the Scottish loosehead, but faded during the second period, like most of his team-mates. 6

Keith Wood: A sensational first-half display in the loose, but his lineout throwing was not always what it might have been. 7

Phil Vickery: Made way for Jason Leonard on the hour-mark, having given it everything, but it wasn't his day. 6

Martin Johnson: The Lions captain produced an imperious first-half display, in the tight exchanges and with ball in hand, yet could do little as things fell apart around him after that. 8

Danny Grewcock: Struggled in the lineouts early on, but then grew in stature before the Lions' collective collapse. 7

Richard Hill: Produced an inspired display until injury cruelly removed him from the action at half-time. The Lions desperately need him next Saturday. 8

Neil Back: Scored a trademark lineout driving try, but came off second best behind Wallabies openside Smith. 7

Scott Quinnell: Embarked on some trademark charges, proving a handful for the Wallabies defence, but couldn't keep it going over 80 minutes. 7
