Jason Robinson produced another timely nudge to the British and Irish Lions selectors with an inspirational display to keep alive Sale's Premiership play-off ambitions.
Billy Whizz revelled in his new full-back role as Sale swept aside relegated Rotherham 39-13 at Clifton Lane in front of England defensive coach Phil Larder, who is also on the Lions coaching panel. Reduced to the role of virtual spectator during his time on the wing, the former rugby league international was able to impose himself in his roving role and Rotherham had no answer to his electrifying pace and footwork wizardry. Such versatility could yet enable him to force his way into the Lions squad, although Robinson is not holding his breath. Robinson beat practically the whole Rotherham defence with one mesmerising first-half run and was Sale's only serious threat until they hit a purple patch early in the second period.
Tries from Robinson, winger Anthony Elliott - playing only his second senior game - and centre Jos Baxendell in a devastating eight-minute spell took Sale into a commanding 25-3 lead. Elliott grabbed a second and lock Scott Lines also touched down, ensuring the crucial bonus point, as the visitors piled on the agony for Rotherham, who had to be content with late consolation tries from Ben Wade and Philip Greaves. While Sale contemplate a tilt at the play-offs - two wins from their last three matches should secure eighth place - Rotherham are already looking ahead to life in Division One.
