Matt Cardey is tonight awaiting clearance to make his Wales debut in Saturday's Lloyds TSB Six Nations Championship clash against Scotland at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, with the green light appearing only to be a formality with the Welsh Rugby Union now holding a copy of his Gwent-born grandmother's birth certificate.
WRU secretary Dennis Gethin intended presenting the copy to International Rugby Board chief executive when they assembled for a pre-arranged meeting in Cardiff today. New Zealand-born Cardey has ironically been called in to replace his compatriot Shane Howarth, who after several caps, now has to re-establish proof of the nationality of his grandfather.
