Ireland international scrum-half Ciaran Scally has been forced to retire from the game at the age of 20. The Blackrock College and Leinster player, who will be 21 next month, has been advised to quit playing because of bone damage in his right knee.
Scally, who earned four full caps and was a member of the preliminary squad for the forthcoming World Cup, said, “I am absolutely devastated by the news. Medical opinion is that I should not play again”.
Ireland manager Donal Lenihan added, “On behalf of the Irish team management
and squad I would like to say how sad I am to hear the news. In every respect he was a fine young athlete with a bright future ahead of him and all of Irish rugby wishes him well”.
