Ireland prop Finlay Bealham has been given the all-clear to face South Africa after passing his head injury assessments.

The 31-year-old Connacht tighthead was taken off 10 minutes after coming on as a half-time replacement in the 59-16 win over Tonga on Saturday.

"He was obviously taken off the field at the weekend and failed his [HIA]," said scrum coach John Fogarty at a press briefing this afternoon.

"He's subsequently passed his tests and he's perfect, he was in a scrum today and he's good to go, symptom-free.

"Our medics and World Rugby have cleared him fit to play so we’re delighted to have a full [clean] bill of health."

While Bealham failed a head injury assessment during the game on Saturday, the HIA process is spread out across three separate assessments by an independent doctor.

The test which Bealham failed in-game is known as HIA1, with players having a second test immediately after the game, as well as a third assessment between 36 and 48 hours after full-time.

If a player passes both HIA2 and HIA3, they are cleared of concussion and are free to play.

Bealham, Jack Conan and Dan Sheehan all took part in training today in Tours.

A foot injury has kept number 8 Conan out of action since 5 August and most of his rehabilitation has taken place away from the training pitch, however, he was able to join the rest of the squad this morning.

Fogarty said: "Jack is doing bits and pieces today, he didn't do a full-blooded one but he’s on the field and he’s going to do a little bit more tomorrow.

"He’ll be managed as a returning player would be but yeah, we’ve a full bill of health.

"Jack [will] do more tomorrow and it’s then a decision to see how he is. He’s up for selection, we’re on our feet, it’s been brilliant."

Hooker Sheehan sprained foot ligaments exactly a month ago in the friendly against England and appears to be on course to be available for selection against the world champions.

"I saw him in a scrum today, so I was very excited to see him in scrums," Fogarty added.

"We did some timing in our scrums, some drop-ins, and Dan took part.

"It's great to see him back involved. He’s a player who’s returning so we’ll do a bit more tomorrow and see how he is."

South Africa are due to name their team for the Stade de France match-up this afternoon.

"There's definitely an edge," said the former Connacht, Leinster and Munster hooker about Ireland’s preparation for what is seen as a likely Pool B decider.

"It’s a incredibly exciting week to be involved in. Everyone wants to be in the starting 15 and make the match-day 23 so competition for places is right up there. To be playing the world champions in Paris is incredibly exciting.

"We are clear in our heads as a group what the plan is and who is going to carry out that plan."
