Ireland player ratings: Aki main man in Romania rout

Ireland are off to a winning start
Ireland are off to a winning start

Ireland eased into the World Cup with a routine victory over Romania during which they ran in 12 tries.

The 82-8 win was Ireland's biggest ever World Cup score and margin of victory.

Here's how we rated the players.

Hugo Keenan – 7

The full-back saw lots of action, with Romania not shy about putting boot to ball. Kicked one out on the full in the first half but was his usual reliable self. Simply outnumbered for Gabriel Rupanu's try and carried well all day. Good strength for his try.

Keith Earls – 6

Came off his wing eager for work and was unlucky on a couple of occasions when the ball just wouldn’t stick with a try chance on. Beat four defenders over the day. Was shepherded out of the way for the Romania try.

Garry Ringrose – 7

Solid shift by the centre, who made a couple of clean breaks for his 99 metres. Lost the ball forward softly in contact at one point in the second half. Not tested defensively as Ireland enjoyed 69% possession.

Bundee Aki – 8

Best player on display and a constant threat with ball in hand as he carried over the gainline 12 times and made three offloads. Took his two tries well and didn’t tire over a full shift in 35C heat.

James Lowe – 7

Buzzed around without ever getting close to his free-flowing best, while making 137m with ball in hand and beating five defenders. On the end of a lot of Romanian kicks and generally returned well.

Johnny Sexton – 7.5

Just what the doctor ordered after six months out. Scored two well-taken tries and kicked seven conversions. Now Ireland’s top RWC scorer with 102 and just nine off Ronan O’Gara’s all-time points record. Some concern after Jason Tomane’s knee landed on his wrist but declared himself "good" after his 66-minute outing.

Jamison Gibson-Park – 7

Kept the tempo up as usual and ran a good support line for Ireland’s first try. Had a decent platform to work off for the most part and will have tougher tests ahead.

Andrew Porter – 7

Made a good rampaging run in the first half that lifted Ireland but was called out for an offside penalty as well. Made 15 metres with two carries.

Rob Herring – 7

Ireland’s lineout struggled early doors again, with the usual caveat about all the moving parts. Powered over for his fifth international try and ran some clever lines in loose play to get Ireland over the gainline. Likely Farrell’s number two number 2 now.

Tadhg Furlong – 7

Quiet enough outing for the prop. Threw an early intercept before winning the ball back shortly afterwards. Made three tackles from three attempts and kept the motor ticking for the bigger games to come.

Joe McCarthy – 7

Very competent first competitive start on his fourth cap for the young Leinster lock. Worked tirelessly on both sides of the ball and didn’t hesitate when the gap opened up for his try, having being denied moments earlier. Made six tackles and won two turnovers. Made one clean break and beat four defenders in total .

James Ryan – 7

Unspectacular outing but his 56-minute shift will keep him in good fettle. Took three of Ireland’s lineout throws and nicked one off the Romanians.

Tadhg Beirne – 7

Starting at flanker, Beirne lasted the full 80 in tough conditions, scoring Ireland’s third and 12th tries and returning a 100% tackle success rate. Claimed a couple of lineouts and kept the Oaks’ defenders busy when on the ball.

Peter O'Mahony – 7

Named official player of the match but conceded he wasn’t sure about that accolade. Scored his fourth and fifth Irish tries and completed a full shift during which he was Ireland’s top tackler with seven and none missed.

Caelan Doris – 7

Beat four defenders and was solid, if unspectacular by his own standards. Won a turnover and contributed five tackles to the cause. As with everyone else, getting out of of Bordeaux intact, after the result, was the most important thing

Replacements

Rónan Kelleher (for Herring 51) – 6

Overthrew soon after coming on as the lineout woes continued but good to see him back in action.

Jeremy Loughman (for Porter 51) – 6

Was busy after coming on without doing anything outstanding.

Tom O'Toole (for Furlong 51) - 6

Lively cameo from the Ulster man.

Iain Henderson (for Ryan 56) - 6

Came on to relieve Ryan and did his work.

Josh van der Flier (for Doris 56) - 7

Best of the replacements, made a couple of breaks.

Conor Murray (for Gibson-Park 60) - 6

Did what was required.

Jack Crowley (for Sexton 66) - 6

Lovely conversion from the sideline after O’Mahony’s second try.

Mack Hansen (for Earls 60) - 6

Was a late call-up for Robbie Henshaw and saw plenty of ball after coming on. Persistence led to Ireland’s last try.
