Byrne has been an understudy to Johnny Sexton at both club and international level but has seen off rival out-halves to earn a spot in the squad for his first World Cup.
He returned to the Ireland fold after over 18 months out of favour in last year's autumn game against Australia, when he kicked the winning penalty.
The Dubliner featured in all five Six Nations games, starting one, as Ireland claimed the Grand Slam.
