McCarthy earned his first Irish call-up for last summer's tour of New Zealand and played in the two midweek games against the Maori All Blacks, before making his full Ireland debut against Australia in November.
The 22-year-old couldn’t add to his caps in the Six Nations, having picked up an injury after Round 2 which saw him ruled out for the remainder of the championship.
Played in two of Ireland's three warm-up games, forcing his way into the squad off the back of impressive performances against Italy and England.
