Born in Cape Town, the Ulster hooker was initially capped by Ireland on the 2014 summer tour of Argentina, but had to wait more than three years to pull on the green shirt again.
The 33-year-old has enjoyed plenty of gametime with Ireland in recent seasons, despite such heavy competition for places alongside Dan Sheehan and Rónan Kelleher.
Herring has played 229 times for Ulster since joining the province in 2012, and needs just one more appearance to set a new record for the province.
