The former Portora/Enniskillen RBC clubmates finished sixth in the final at the Paris Olympics and will have another shot at a medal after catching the Netherlands for third in their semi-final.
The New Zealand boat finished first in 06:25.89, followed by Spain 06:28.56 and Ireland in 06:29.99.

Jake McCarthy - twin brother of double Olympic champion Fintan - was third in his lightweight men's single sculls heat.
Despite being pipped for the second automatic qualifying position by the host nation's Gu Jiantao, the Skibbereen man's time of 6:56.65 was third-fastest overall and enough for a spot in Thursday's second semi-final (3.49am).
The long-standing repechage system has been eliminated, meaning boats that do not progress are placed directly into B, C or D finals.
Women's pair Emily Hegarty and Aoife Casey just missed out on a semi-final place on Sunday and won their C final today.
Likewise, the men’s quad - Andrew Sheehan, Adam Murphy, Brian Colsh and Ronan Byrne - won their C final this morning.
