Irish crews got their World Rowing Championships campaign underway in Shanghai on Sunday morning, with Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan producing the most eye-catching performance in the men's pair.

Timoney and Corrigan finished second in their heat to directly qualify for the semi-final. They remained in second behind Romania throughout the race, responding to a push in the last 200 metres from third-placed Denmark. They're back on the water on Tuesday.

The women’s pair of Emily Hegarty and Aoife Casey finished fourth in their heat in a time of 7:13.17. The duo were just outside the semi-final qualifying mark, and will now race in Tuesday's C final.

The men’s quad (Andrew Sheehan, Adam Murphy, Brian Colsh and Ronan Byrne) finished fourth in their heat with a time of 5:51.97, also seeing them progress to a C final on Tuesday. The Irish crew maintained fourth position throughout, mounting a late push on Croatia in the final 500m but missing out on a semi-final spot.
