Double world champion Sanita Puspure and Fintan McCarthy are among six Irish rowers to advance to A/B semi-finals tomorrow at the European Rowing Championships from Poznan.
Thirteen Irish rowers were among the 570 competitors from 31 nations in action today, with the event to be broadcast on RTÉ Player this Sunday, with highlights of the Irish competitors who feature in those events on RTÉ2 at 6.30pm.
Sanita Puspure, defending her title in the women's single scull after winning gold at last year's championships in Lucerne, finished second in her heat with a time of 07:35.51 and will race in the A/B semi-final tomorrow morning at 10:40 or 10:45am.
Also in action tomorrow morning will be Skibbereen club man Fintan McCarthy.
The 23-year-old won world gold in the Irish men's lightweight double with Paul O’Donovan at the 2019 senior World Rowing Championships, but with the 2016 Olympic silver medallist tied up with college commitments, is competing in the single sculls.
Having finished third in his heat, McCarthy powered to victory in the repechage with a time of 07:07.35 to seal a place in tomorrow’s A/B semi-final at either 9.33 or 9.38am.
Margaret Cremin and Aoife Casey have finished second in the lightweight double sculls repechage to book their place in Saturday’s A/B semi-final at 10/10.05am, as did the men’s new double team of Ronan Byrne and Daire Lynch.
The pair, who won gold in the men’s double at Under-23 level in September, finished second in their heat and will be in action in tomorrow morning’s A/B semi-final at 9.13 or 9.18am.
Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Aileen Crowley and Fiona Murtagh finished second in the Women’s Four heat and will race in tomorrow’s repechage at 10:20am.
Lydia Heaphy finished sixth in the lightweight women's single heat and will be in action for the repechage tomorrow morning at 9.23am.
The Women’s Two crew of Tara Hanlon and Emily Hegarty finished third in today’s heat and their repechage will take place at 8.53am.
