C1 bronze for Irish canoeist Liam Jegou

Irish canoeist Liam Jegou claimed a bronze medal in the men's C1 at the canoe slalom World U23 Championships in Krakow, Poland.

Jegou produced the finest run of his career, attacking the course from the start before a tip at the 14th of 20 gates cost him two penalty seconds. His time of 89.97 seconds was the fastest of the day before those two seconds brought his total up to 91.97.

Winner with a faultless run in 90.39 secs was Nicolas Gestin of France; his French team mate Lucas Roisin was second with 91.34. The pair are well known to Jegou who is originally from Ballyvaughan in Co Clare but who lives and trains in the French city of Pau.

Earlier in the morning Jegou had finished fourth fastest of 20 starters in the semi-finals with a time of 93.79. The top ten went through to the final.

A fault-free semi-final in 93.79 seconds saw him finish fourth fastest of the 20 semi-finalists with ten going forward to the final.
