Gary and Paul O’Donovan eased into the European Championships lightweight men's double sculls final after they just about won their semi-final.

The Skibbereen brothers came home in 6:28.14 and that was a half a second ahead of the Belgian pair.

"We were scrappy enough off the start. About 750m in we got a solid crosswind," Gary O'Donovan told RTÉ Sport.

"I said to Paul, 'put the head down'. I could tell with the peripheral vision that we were moving through the crews. Once we had our noses in front it was easy enough to control it to the finish line.

"Coming into the closing stages I think we were controlling it. It'll be a different story tomorrow. We should [have another gear]. But in saying that, so do all the other guys."

The final goes off at 11.30am on Sunday morning and is live on RTÉ2.
