All three of Ireland’s crews have failed to make their respective finals at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France, this morning.
Ireland’s men lightweight pair of Mark O'Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll have finished fifth in their heat and missed out on qualification for the A final.
Lightweight men’s double sculls Gary O'Donovan and Paul O'Donovan have also missed out on qualification, with a fifth-place finish in their semi-final. However, if the crew finish anywhere but last in the B final they will qualify for Rio 2016.
And finally, lightweight women's double crew Claire Lambe and Sinead Jennings also missed out on the decider as they came home fourth in their heat. Again, all but the last boat in the B final will claim a country place at next year's Olympics.
Jennings said: "We were unfortunate. We were only half a second off third place and that would have got us into the 'A' final and a chance of a medal tomorrow.
"We had a really, really good race. We were very strong through the middle of it and unfortunately we didn't have a strong enough sprint finish. We have only been together a short time and that takes some time to develop.
"If we could add that to our really good race for next year, we could be in with a shout of a medal then and that's what I'm looking at now.
"We just need to go out tomorrow and make sure we quality the boat for Rio. It really is exciting, I'm so proud of us as a crew and the work we have done with our coach. It has been great."
Lisa Dilleen and Helen Hannigan finished fourth in their heat of their women's double sculls C/D semi-final.
Pararower Karol Doherty finished fourth in his C final of the arms and shoulders single sculls, which was 16th position overall.
