Ireland’s Lisa Dilleen and Helen Hannigan finished sixth in their heat of the women’s double sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France, this morning.

Germany made an early attempt to seize the one semi-final qualification place on offer, but New Zealand’s double took control of the second half of the race and won well.

Ireland are set for a repechage on Wednesday afternoon.

Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll finished fourth in their heat of the men’s lightweight pair and must negotiate a repechage if they are to qualify for the semi-finals.

Italy took charge from the outset and won, and Ireland just missed out to Spain and the United States for the other two qualifying places.

Karol Doherty finished fifth in his heat of the arms and shoulders single sculls, in which the City of Derry sculler would have had to finish first to gain direct qualification to the semi-finals.
