Gearoid Towey and Ciaran Lewis, competing in an Atlantic rowing race, are this evening reported to have sent out a distress signal.
The signal, sent by 28-year-old Towey and 34-year-old Lewis from their boat Digicel Atlantic Challenge, was picked up by the US Coastguard at 17.46 GMT. The craft was located 1,400 nautical miles south east of Bermuda.
The two rowers began the race on November 30 last along with 25 other teams. They set out from St Sebastian de La Gomera in the Canary Islands on a two thousand 900 mile trip, across the Atlantic to Antigua in the Caribbean.
