Ireland’s Sam Lynch and Gearoid Towey have been forced to withdraw from the remainder of the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls at the World Cup Regatta in Lucerne due to an illness on Towey’s part.
With just two months to go before the Olympics this is the best decision for the Irish duo and is a necessary precautionary measure when Athens is their ultimate goal.
Speaking this morning Towey said: "While we are disappointed not to be able to complete the regatta, it is obviously better that this has occurred now and not in Athens. As soon as I have recovered we will go back to Sweden and continue with our Olympic preparations."
The double finished third in their heat yesterday morning to progress to yesterday’s repechage where they finished an exceptionally close second to current World Champions Italy.
