Racing is off at Fairyhouse

Today's card at Fairyhouse has fallen victim to the weather after the track was deemed unfit for racing following an inspection this morning.

The Irish Horse Racing Board said in a statement that lower temperatures than had been forecast had forced the cancellation and the track was unable to recover in time.

Dan & Joan Moore Memorial Handicap Chase had been the promised feature race of the day, with four Willie Mullins runners, alongside two from Gordon Elliott, with last year's winner The King Of Prs entering again for Gavin Cromwell.

The race meeting has now been rescheduled for this Wednesday, 14 January.

"Unfortunately the situation hasn't improved enough here to pass the track at Fairyhouse," said Brian Hamilton, IHRB Clerk of the Course at Fairyhouse.

"The fog which developed overnight was an added factor to temperatures dropping lower than was forecast and it is currently -1 here with parts of the track unfit for racing.

"Temperatures are due to rise later but the 5 degrees that was forecast is now just 3 degrees and we just don't have sufficient time for enough of a thaw on the raced ground to pass the track.

"It has been very a very difficult decision but the weather has just gone against us."

In England, Kempton Park's Lanzarote Hurdle card will go ahead as planned this afternoon – but Warwick’s Classic Chase meeting has ultimately failed to beat the weather.

Despite being passed fit for racing on Friday after managing to navigate a freezing week, the threat of sub-zero temperatures overnight had led to precautionary 8.00am raceday checks being called at both tracks.

Warwick said in a post on X: "Whilst the majority of the track is raceable, the back straight remains frozen in areas. The contingency plan we put in place yesterday, using the outer hurdle line, has frozen under the sheets and is unraceable.

"With temperatures only forecast to rise above freezing by 10am, and highs of only 2C, there will not be sufficient improvement ahead of racing."
