Inspections planned for The Curragh and Tramore

The Curragh will be inspected on Saturday morning

Saturday morning inspections are planned for The Curragh and Tramore racecourses as Storm Betty continues to threaten the weekend's sporting calendar.

A status yellow weather warning is in place in Kildare and a status orange warning in Waterford, and officials will be out early in the morning to decide whether or not racing can go ahead.

The ground was good at The Curragh on Friday evening although the flat track at Tramore was heavy with some waterlogging.

Brendan Sheridan, Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board clerk of the course at The Curragh racecourse said: "Conditions at The Curragh have been much better than in other parts of the country this afternoon and we’ve only had 3mm of rain today. It is just light rain at present.

"However, having spoken with Met Éireann again this evening there is a Status Yellow Rain Warning in place which could bring anything from 15mm to 30mm of rain overnight.

"For that reason, we feel it is right to call a precautionary inspection ahead of the fixture at The Curragh tomorrow afternoon, but I would be optimistic that with the current forecast we will be okay to race."

Paddy Graffin, Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board at Tramore said: "The rain began here at Tramore shortly before racing today and has been fairly relentless since. Thankfully we remained raceable throughout and the riders reported no issues through the seven races this evening.

"We had 22mm of rain in total since 3pm through to 8.30pm and the flat track is naturally heavy. Having just walked it, there is some waterlogging now in places on what will be the flat racing line tomorrow.

"The forecast is for us to get up to another 10mm of rain through the night but then to turn mainly dry and breezy thereafter so hopefully we'll have some good news after the inspection tomorrow."
