Aidan O'Brien's Mother Earth wins 1000 Guineas at Newmarket

Mother Earth was a convincing winner of the Qipco 1000 Guineas for Aidan O'Brien and Frankie Dettori.

Returning to the scene of her third in last year’s Fillies’ Mile, Mother Earth was the Ballydoyle second string behind the well-touted Santa Barbara.

But from stall two, the 10-1 shot challenged from off the pace as the field fanned out across the track in the final furlong and was a length and a neck clear at the line.

Mother Earth – recording O’Brien’s fifth 1000 Guineas victory in the last six years – was chased home by Saffron Beach and Fev Rover, with 5-2 joint-favourite Santa Barbara fourth.
