The RTÉ cameras are in Gowran for the annual Carlow/Kilkenny bacchanal that is Thyestes day.

Unfortunately, Bacchus won't be raising his pretty little head this year. It will be nice to sit down in front of the telly for some quality fare all the same. It looks a competitive card - and the ground will ride extremely testing.

1.15 Langtons Hotel Handicap Hurdle

Fallen Forest looked set to play a prominent role in proceedings last time out. He was unlucky to come down three flights from home. He has time on his side, and rates a sporting wager to start climbing the ranks here. Djasek took a big step forward on his latest start. He won't need to improve much to take a hand here.

Selection: Fallen Forest 12-1

1.45 Connoly's Red Mills Maiden Hurdle

Fangio De Vassy made a promising Rules debut in Leopardstown over Christmas. That is the best piece of form on offer here. Improvement should be forthcoming and he will take all the beating. Gelee Blanche is limited but does receive plenty of weight. She's feared most.

Selection: Fangio De Vassy 13-8

2.20 Galmoy Hurdle

More questions than answers here. Sixshooter appeals as a solid each-way play. He arrives here in good form and has plenty of upside. He jumped better last time out at Navan and the attritional conditions will hold few terrors for him. Great White Shark is an improving, consistent mare. She's entitled to her prominent position in the betting.

Selection: Sixshooter 13-2

2.50 Adare Manor Handicap Hurdle

Pairc Na Ngael was an expensive failure in Limerick over Christmas, though he did run into a rapidly improving horse. Connections clearly thought him well handicapped before that race; a four-pound rise is unlikely to alter that view. Street Value must overcome an 11-pound rise for his Clonmel win. He remains unexposed.

Selection: Pairc Na Ngael 15-8

3.25 Goffs Thyestes Chase

Always a tricky puzzle, this year's renewal looks a real head-scratcher. Spyglass Hill heads the betting and I can see why. He's relatively unexposed, and hasn't enjoyed much luck in a couple of handicap starts. However Brahma Bull gets the nod. He's probably on a fair mark, and the booking of Brian Hayes looks significant. If Brahma Bull's jumping and stamina, hold he could well outclass these. Smoking Gun is first reserve. He went off favourite for this race last year. If getting in, he would have to be respected.

Selection: Brahma Bull 8-1

4.00 Daly Farrell Beginners Chase

Antey has struggled since going chasing. This is by far the easiest assignment he has faced though. He had jumped well in the main before departing at the penultimate fence last time out. His proven stamina should prove an asset in these conditions. Jungle Junction can complete the forecast.

Selection: Antey 11-4

4.30 PJ Foley INH Flat Race

Not much to go on here. It's probably folly to oppose Willie Mullins at his local track. Oppose him I will all the same. Old Soul is interesting. Liz Doyle has trained two siblings of this horse. Both were well backed on their bumper debuts. They finished first and second. It would come as little surprise were Old Soul to prove popular with punters. That could be significant.

Selection: Old Soul 5-1
