The funeral of Pat Smullen took place at St Peter's Church in Rhode, County Offaly on Friday.

Smullen, who was crowned champion jockey nine times in Ireland, died on Tuesday at the age of 43 from pancreatic cancer.

Weighing room colleagues past and present paid tributes earlier in the week, with the likes of Ruby Walsh, Frankie Dettori, Mick Kinane and Johnny Murtagh praising his skill in the saddle as well as his qualities out of it.

After his diagnosis, Smullen focused his energies into fundraising initiatives for Cancer Trials Ireland, including an Irish Champions Weekend legends race that ultimately raised €2.6m for the cause.

Social distancing protocols severely limited the numbers who could join his wife Frances and children Paddy, Hannah and Sarah at the funeral service to celebrate his life, but large numbers gathered outside the church. The service was also streamed on Zoom.

The Aga Khan colours he carried to victory on Harzand in the the Derby at Epsom and later at the Curragh draped his coffin.

In her eulogy, his wife remembered a man who was her "best friend" and her "soulmate".

"My heart is broken," she said. "I've lost my best friend, my soulmate.

"Hannah, Paddy and Sarah have not just lost their lovely Dad, but their mentor, friend, ally and rock.

"You should know that Dad was so proud of each of you and the people that you have become. He's carried you and I know you will continue to carry him with you every day."

Rhode parish priest Fr Greg Corcoran was the chief celebrant and he said: Fr Cormican said: "I wouldn't be the greatest on social media, but last night I scrolled down through all the different comments on Twitter to see what people were saying about Pat.

"There was a constant theme running through them, a huge emphasis on him being a gentleman. He was a sportsman known all over the world, but it was underpinned by the sense of being a very nice person."

Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
