Stage two of the Western Odyssey. There's a bit of rain forecast. It shouldn't have too much impact on the ground. The festival faithful are promised a balmy evening.
5.20pm Colm Quinn BMW Novice Hurdle
Just the five runners. How hard can it be? Pretty tricky to my eye anyway. Turnpike Trip was a decent sort on the flat. His jumping was a little novicey when making a winning hurdles bow in Cork. Expect plenty of improvement. He's marginally preferred. If Fine Brunello can repeat the form of his Cheltenham second in January, he would take some stopping. That's a big if though.
Selection: Turnpike Trip 9/1
5.55pm Latin Quarter Beginners Chase
Zero Ten was a talented, progressive novice hurdler. He stands out in this company. He's a scopey sort, and a reasonably clean round of jumping should suffice here. Ten Ten showed plenty of ability in three runs over hurdles. He's had physical issues. Time is on his side though, and he can chase the selection home.
Selection: Zero Ten 8/11
6.25pm Colm Quinn BMW Irish EBF Fillies Maiden
Petite Musique and Azila were both quite green when fourth and fifth respectively in a hot Leopardstown maiden. Azila, in her defence, was making her debut. Petite Musique, on the other hand, just looks a very slow learner. This track really is a place where horses need their wits about them. It's hard to shake the impression that she's going to be a talented filly in time. Hopefully she can take advantage of a decent draw. Azila rates the main danger.
Selection: Petite Musique 15/8
7.05pm Caulfield Industrial Maiden
This doesn't look to be much of a race. The draw has been kind to Limit Long. He should appreciate the return to seven furlongs too. He's readily preferred. Dubai Is Great has quite an interesting back story. A big run, at massive odds, wouldn't come as a total shock.
Selection: Limit Long 3/1
7.40pm Colm Quinn BMW Mile
The feature looks even more competitive than usual. This race should be run at a really strong pace. Hopefully that will bring Hamley's stamina into play. She has been undone by falsely run races on her last couple of starts. Saltonstall probably has his own ideas about the game. He might enjoy this test though, and lurks on a dangerous mark.
Selection: Hamley 16/1
8.10pm Caulfield Industrial Handicap
Passing Trade continues in fine form. He's drawn to attack, in a race not loaded with obvious early pace. That tactical edge may be enough to see him gain a deserved win. Cyrus Dallin can probably win off this mark. He's saddled with a brutal draw though.
Selection: Passing Trade 7/1
8.40pm Caulfieldindustrial.com Handicap
Atlas is a hard horse to win with. He should get plenty of cover, and a strong pace to run at here. Hopefully that will aid Killian Leonard in his attemp to land the horse on the line. Atlas generally keeps stronger company than tomorrow's opposition. Saggitarius Rising should come on plenty for his seasonal bow at Limerick. The stars haven't aligned on the draw front unfortunately.
Selection: Atlas 14/1
