Alice Springs rewarded her legion of backers by claiming the Tattersalls 250th Year Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket in emphatic fashion as favourite Usherette flopped, with Aidan O’Brien’s filly smashing the course record in the process.
The daughter of Galileo was a heavily-supported 5-2 chance to open her account for the campaign in the Group One feature, having been placed in both the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this season.
Ryan Moore positioned his mount in third place early on, with Godolphin pacemaker Very Special and Irish Rookie disputing the running.
Moore made his move over a furlong out and Alice Springs showed a smart turn of foot to claim a lead she never looked like relinquishing.
The Ballydoyle inmate galloped on up the hill to pass the post two-and-a-quarter lengths clear of Very Special, who finished second at 16-1.
Favourite Usherette, so impressive when landing the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, was bitterly disappointing on this faster surface, as was last year's winner Amazing Maria.
Moore said: "Aidan said he felt she was improving.
"She's a big girl and she's had a busy year, but she's kept coming forward all the time and it was a very good performance.
"I think the ground helped her, but she's quite adaptable.
"It went very smooth for us. We had a good run and she deserved that."
