Pat Smullen is keeping his fingers crossed for safe ground at the Curragh next Saturday to allow Epsom hero Harzand to bid for the Derby double.

The son of Sea The Stars bolted up in a March maiden at Cork on his seasonal debut before confirming his Classic credentials with victory in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown the following month.

His participation at Epsom was thrown into doubt at the last minute after he spread a plate on the journey from Ireland, but he was eventually given the green light and it proved the right call as he revelled in the rain-softened ground to claim Investec Derby glory.

Connections immediately stated their intentions to head for next weekend's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and Dermot Weld's charge remains firmly on course, according to his stable jockey.

Smullen said: "If the ground is safe, I'm sure he'll take his chance. The easy side of good should be OK, but that decision will be for the boss.

"We are very happy with him."
