A bewildered Barry Geraghty said What's The Scoop "just panicked" in a bizarre finish to the two-mile novices' hurdle at Sandown, as his mount darted off course to throw away a certain victory.
The Nicky Henderson-trained half-brother to Harchibald looked home and hosed after clearing the last, but spectators were left gasping in disbelief as he suddenly jolted left, paving the way for Starving Marvin to trot home for the unlikeliest of victories.
"He jumped the last big and I knew he was having a look at the stands up the straight," Geraghty told the Racing Post.
"It is a daunting place and he was having a big look when he got to the front. When the rail ran out he just turned left - I still thought if I could pull him back on course five or six yards from the stands rail he would still win.
"He just panicked as well as being a big baby. He is really intelligent - like his owner and trainer!"
