Cork Racecourse is set to get a €520,000 facelift over the next number of years to improve facilities both to patrons and industry staff.

Horse Racing Ireland are to provide a €200,000 grant for the works, which are to be carried out by 2018.

The investment will be primarily aimed at improving the stable yard, which is almost 20 years old and has suffered from adverse weather conditions.

The main restaurant is to be upgraded to provide a better level of service to racegoers.

The parade ring and turnstiles are also to be improved under the plan.

An application for further funding to improve the track at the Mallow venue is to be considered by Horse Racing Ireland later in the year.

Racecourse manager Michael O'Neill has welcomed the news, saying: "Our aim... is to provide the best possible experience for all those who attend the 18 fixtures which we stage each year at our facility, both industry professionals and racegoers."
