Former jumping acquaintances Peter Niven and Graham Lee teamed up on the Flat to take the honours with Clever Cookie in the Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes at Chester.
It was a memorable moment for Niven as he provided Grand National-winning rider Lee with his last ever winner over jumps with Posh Bird in the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick in January 2012.
Although Lee is very much in demand, the North Yorkshire handler acquires his services whenever he can and was rewarded with his biggest success as a trainer in the Group Three feature.
Clever Cookie (8-1) could make a swift return in the Betway Yorkshire Cup at York next Friday, while the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot is now a possibility if conditions are suitable and he could renew rivalry with runner-up Tac De Boistron.
The seven-year-old stayed on best of all in the wet conditions to outpoint the 11-10 favourite by a length and a quarter.
The first two pulled six lengths clear of Deuce Again (8-1) in third.
"He might go for the Yorkshire Cup next week. He was hardly blowing after that," said Niven.
"Obviously the ground is going to be the key with him with regards to Ascot and places like that, but there are loads of opportunities for him.
"He should have won the Doncaster Cup last year, but we got it wrong. We tracked the wrong horse and it cost us a couple of lengths.
"Graham's made up for that today and given him a peach of a ride.
"I gave Graham his last winner over jumps with Posh Bird at Catterick. If we've got one good enough Graham likes to ride it, but he's hard to get these days."
Not So Sleepy (11-1) showed a willing resolve to get the better of Disegno in a thrilling finish to the Betfair Dee Stakes.
Jim Crowley dictated affairs from the front on Hughie Morrison's gelding and though Not So Sleepy was headed briefly by Disegno in the short straight, he battled back bravely to get the verdict by a short head.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained 6-5 favourite Smuggler's Cove could not handle the difficult ground conditions and was last of the four.
Morrison said: "He has a lot of ability and it's thanks to the lads who ride him at home that he's run the race he has today.
"He was a bit keen, but he loved it. He stayed every yard and went on the ground.
"There is no grand plan. He probably wants soft ground, so he might go to France at some stage."
Roudee (6-1), third over six furlongs on this course 24 hours earlier, went two places better in the Crabbie's EBF Stallions Handicap over the minimum trip despite unshipping Hayley Turner on the way to the start and running loose.
Tom Dascombe's charge was totally unruffled and put the race to bed in style as he bounded clear in the final furlong to beat Rita's Boy by a length and a quarter.
Dascombe said: "I thought he was a good thing yesterday, but unfortunately he missed the break and never got into it, although he ran on to finish third.
"I was looking for any excuse not to run him today, but the owners are crazy about Chester and wanted to run."
Newstead Abbey (11-2) won his first race since March 2013 with a gritty display in the Betfair Earl Grosvenor Handicap.
Graham Gibbons brought the David Barron-trained five-year-old with a telling challenge in the straight to beat the pacesetting Rene Mathis by a length and three-quarters.
Apprentice Jack Garritty is just one winner away from having his 5lb allowance reduced to 3lb after steering Instant Attraction home in the Love2Shop Handicap.
Garritty showed his skill by delivering Jedd O'Keeffe's charge from the widest draw to defeat Chosen Character by three-quarters of a length.
Vibe Queen (100-30) stepped up on her Newbury debut fourth to open her account in the LDF Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
The John Gosden-trained filly swept five lengths clear of River Of Babylon under Rab Havlin.
Andrew Balding's Storm Force Ten (100-30 favourite) warded off all potential challengers to land the Betway Apprentice Handicap under 7lb claimer Edward Greatrex by two and a quarter lengths from Two Jabs.
