The Package rolled back the years to win for the first time at the Cheltenham Festival and give Jamie Codd a second success of the week in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup.

Placed twice at the meeting and having run in Grand Nationals before, his best days appeared to be behind him but the 12-year-old looked reborn, bounding up the hill.

Codd won the four-mile National Hunt Chase on Gordon Elliott's Cause Of Causes on Tuesday and while he was riding for David Pipe this time, it was Elliott's Bless The Wings who came from the clouds to chase him home under Nina Carberry.

Sent off at 9-1 in the silks so closely associated with the late David Johnson, The Package won by 12 lengths, with Buddy Bolero third and Grand Vision fourth.

It is the third time Codd has won the race after Character Building in 2009 and Junior in 2012.

The well-backed favourite Champagne James never threatened to get involved for Ted and Katie Walsh.

Codd said: "It was a great training performance to get a 12-year-old to come back, he's run great at previous Festivals and to it in the Johnson colours is absolutely fantastic."

Darna sprang a 33-1 surprise to hold off the well-backed Monetaire in the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate.

Trainer Kim Bailey, who saddled the winners of the Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle 20 years ago with Master Oats and Alderbrook, was back on the Festival scoresheet.

Bailey has enjoyed his best season since those halcyon days, and a Festival win caps it all off.

After a false start, David Pipe's Monetaire was left briefly when the tapes went up and the fact he was only beaten a length and a quarter, it may have proved costly.

The Irish raider Rawnaq and Buywise came flying up the hill to claim minor honours.

Bailey said: "The owners have had horses with me for a long time and paid a lot of money for him, for us anyway, he cost £100,000.

"He's had a lot of problems but we gave him a wind operation and all he wanted was good ground.

"I said to David Bass, I'm sorry you're losing the ride on Un Ace (to Tony McCoy) but I do think you'll beat him.

"The last time he had good ground he won and Tom Scudamore rode him here last time and was cantering coming down the hill and said if only he could breathe he'd have won, so he had the op the following week."

Bass said: "I've come in the past five or six years with chances, but it's never happened and I was starting to think it was never going to happen. This is my last ride (here) this year so it's great.

"To be fair to Kim, I wanted to ride Un Ace and AP became available and he said I might be on the right one and you never know, he was flying and would travel. He travelled great and jumped great. This horse has had wind issues and he got up the hill really well, it's brilliant."

Call The Cops finally gave Nicky Henderson something to cheer about when staying on strongly to win the Pertemps Final.

A winner at Doncaster only 12 days ago, the six-year-old looked well in under just a 5lb penalty.

Andrew Tinkler looked confident throughout, always just behind the first half dozen, and he bounced off the good ground.
Brother Brian gave a bold sight and lead until approaching the last when Unique De Cotte and Henryville loomed alongside.

Call The Cops was able to pick up on the flat, though, and the 9-1 chance won by a length and three-quarters.

Unique De Cotte won the battle for second, with The Tourard Man third and Henryville fourth.

Henderson said: "It's taken a couple of days, but we're very pleased.

"The way it was going I thought something would come and nail us. For Matt Morgan who owns him this makes up for the way it's gone with Sign Of A Victory.

"I'm pleased for Andrew, he deserves it as he's been a star.

"The penalty got him into the race and it's nice to see him come and do that.

"We've hit the bar a few times, they're running well."
Tinkler said: "It's a different atmosphere here to any other week of the year. It's been a long time between wins but we will celebrate tonight and enjoy it.

"He's grown in confidence since Doncaster and he put it all to use today. It was a fantastic run."
