Willie Mullins' second string Nichols Canyon took the Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle after his better-fancied stablemate Allez Colombieres was pulled up early on with what transpired to be a fatal injury.
With the evens favourite out of the race, the former John Gosden-trained dual Listed winner took full advantage.
Following on from his jumping debut victory at Cork, Nichols Canyon (7-2) led before the final flight and went on to score cosily from All Hell Let Loose.
Winning rider Paul Townend said: "He did it nicely. No one likes to see horse like Allez Colombieres pulling up, but he was a deserved winner.
"He was a good Flat horse and stays well. On the whole he jumped better than he did in Cork. He's learning and I think he has an engine as well."
Nichols Canyon was quoted at 12-1 for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle with BetVictor.
Mullins said: "His jumping has improved as he was untidy the last day. Paul said there was plenty left in the tank if anything came to him.
"He'll go the normal two-mile route and will probably run next at Leopardstown after Christmas."
Kalkir had earlier staked a strong early claim for the JCB Triumph Hurdle with an impressive victory in the Bar One Racing Juvenile 3-Y-O Hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Fourth over hurdles at Auteuil in April when trained by Guillaume Macaire, the three-year-old made the best possible start for owner Rich Ricci and trainer Mullins.
Ruby Walsh brought the 9-10 favourite through to lead two out and win as he liked by eight lengths from Dai Bando with Kalkir's stablemate Verawal third.
Walsh said: "He's a maiden taking on winners, but the three-year-olds have all been beating each other and there didn't seem any standout juvenile so far. He jumped super and appreciated an ease in the ground."
Kalkir was cut to 6-1 favourite from 12s for the Triumph at Cheltenham with BetVictor and Betfred.
