The death has taken place of the legendary horse trainer Fergie Sutherland, best known as the trainer of the 1996 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Call.

The 81-year-old died yesterday following a long illness in Marymount Hospice in Cork.

An army officer, educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he spent the past 20 years training horses in West Cork.

Imperial Call was the trainer's first ever runner at the Cheltenham festival and the horse, ridden by jockey Conor O'Dwyer, went on to win the Gold Cup.
