Rank outsider Premio Loco emerged triumphant in the Betfair Celebration Mile at Goodwood. Also the old man of the five runners as an eight-year-old, the 20-1 chance was being strongly pressed on all sides heading towards the final furlong.
The hat-trick seeking Thistle Bird and favourite Aljamaaheer were both produced with serious challenges as the line loomed, but Chris Wall's stable stalwart Premio Loco stuck his head out when it mattered to score by a neck under George Baker.
Thistle Bird just beat Aljamaaheer for second spot.
Chris Wall said afterwards: "I was worried about the ground, but I thought the best of it was against the far rail, so George (Baker) was under strict instructions to stick to the rail like a limpet.
"We don't normally make the running with him, but I thought it might suit him in a race like this and we could let him pick up in his own time.
"I suppose the Joel Stakes at Newmarket would be the next possible race, but he's had a long season and it wouldn't be the end of the world if this was his last run of the year."
