Rugby Walsh recovering at home from a fractured ankle

Ruby Walsh is recovering at home after suffering a heavy fall from Drive Time in Thursday's Guinness Galway Hurdle.

Walsh was partnering the Willie Mullins-trained favourite in the prestigious handicap when he came to grief at the fourth flight, with the rider temporarily knocked unconscious.

Walsh was motionless on the turf for a while before being stretchered off the track and taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays, where doctors discovered the leading jockey had suffered a fractured ankle.

Walsh's father, Ted, is relieved his son escaped with relatively minor injuries.

"He was home last night and he's fine really. The doctors in Galway said he had a small fracture in his ankle, but other than that he's 100%," said Walsh.

"He's going to see his own orthopaedic man this morning, but he's grand."

Walsh now faces an uncertain spell on the sidelines, but Ted does not expect his son to be out of action for too long.

He said: "You wouldn't know how long he'd be out for, how would you know?

"These lads tend to recover a bit quicker than everyone else. I'm sure if he was working in an office he'd be out for six months, but he's not, he's a jockey.

"When he had to have his spleen removed after falling in Cheltenham a few years ago they said he'd be out for six months, and he was back riding in a few weeks.

"These lads (jockeys) are a different breed."
