The weights for the 2011 John Smith’s Grand National will be announced tomorrow at 11.30am when the results of BHA Head Of Handicapping Phil Smith’s deliberations about the 101 entries are revealed.
In a new initiative, Aintree Racecourse will tweet the top five in the weights half an hour earlier (at 11am) to give racing fans an initial focus for discussion. People should follow @AintreeInsider on Twitter to get the news first.
Aintree Racecourse has embraced social media wholeheartedly and tweeting will continue from the 2011 John Smith’s Grand National Official Launch in London throughout the day.
Smith will be present to explain his thinking behind the weights. The John Smith’s Grand National is the only handicap each year in which he has total discretion over the weights’ allocation.
The 2011 John Smith’s Grand National, worth a record £950,000, is run at Aintree at 4.15pm on Saturday, 9 April, the third and final day of the John Smith’s Grand National meeting.
The world’s most famous chase takes place over four and a half miles and 30 fences, with a maximum field of 40 runners.
