Brian Meehan and Frankie Dettori teamed up with Dangerous Midge to provide Britain with a famous winner in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs.

All the pre-race talk had centred around the participation of Sir Michael Stoute's Derby and Arc winner Workforce, but his absence was not felt quite as keenly after the prize stayed in Europe.

Having started the season as a handicapper, Dangerous Midge enjoyed the perfect preparation at Newbury 50 days ago when winning the Arc Trial.

While Dettori is normally the man for the big occasion, this time he was stepping in for the injured Martin Dwyer, who must have been watching with a hint of jealousy.

Settled behind the pace-setting Champ Pegasus, his chance appeared to have gone when Behkabad and John Gosden's Debussy went for a run up the rail.

However, both of their challenges petered out and Champ Pegasus was still in front a furlong out.

Dangerous Midge's stamina kicked in, though, and he powered to the front to win well at 5-1.

Dettori was winning his fourth Breeders' Cup Turf after the wins of Daylami (1999), Fantastic Light (2001) and Red Rocks (2006), the latter being also trained by Meehan.
