Debutant Recital impresses at Navan

Johnny Murtagh was full of praise for Recital after an eyecatching debut success at Navan in the Trim Maiden continued Aidan O'Brien's monopoly of the race.

The Ballydoyle trainer has used this seven-furlong heat to introduce several bright prospects in the past, including Fame And Glory in 2008, and Recital proved up to the task.

A half-brother to Prix Ganay winner Corre Caminos, he was weak in the market, drifting out to 7-2 before being backed near the off into the 5-2 favourite.

The 750,000 guineas son of Montjeu showed signs of greenness before his ability kicked in as he powered past the race-fit Giants Seraphis close home to score by a length and a quarter.

Murtagh is hopeful Recital could develop into a Derby contender next year, saying: ‘It rode like a proper race, and he picked up well.

‘He's a big, green horse who stays well and has plenty of class. You may see him in the first week of June next year.’

Dermot Weld's Midnight Music swooped late under Pat Smullen to deny the gambled-on Freedom in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden.

Freedom, sent off at 100-30 having been available at much longer odds throughout the morning, had built a clear advantage with a furlong to run but Alayir and Midnight Music were finishing with gusto and the latter held sway at the line to score at 6-1.

Ben Curtis extended his lead in a tight race for the Irish apprentice jockeys' championship with a hard-fought victory on White Diamond in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap.

Curtis has 35 winners, two more than Gary Carroll and the suspended Joseph O'Brien, after he got Andrew Oliver's three-year-old home by a neck from Boulay.

‘We had to put her away after running her on quickish ground as a two-year-old,’ said Oliver.

‘I was a bit afraid of the ground drying out, but she's very honest and kept on well.

‘She's in again over a mile and a half at Leopardstown next Monday, and is also in the Doncaster Sales.’

Recent course and distance third Mini Chou (14-1), ridden by Kieran O'Neill, went two places better in the opening Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap, while Il Boro provided Edward Harty with a rare Flat winner in the Navan Golf Captain Nursery Handicap.

Declan McDonogh made his move passing the two-furlong pole on the 8-1 shot and he went a couple of lengths clear but Nucals Star was flashing home at the death and went down by just a head.

Patrick Flynn's Waydownsouth burst through between horses to complete a recent hat-trick of wins in division one of the Navan Lady Gold Captain Handicap, while division two went to the P J Lally-trained 9-2 favourite Mac Tiernan.
