Profound Beauty bags Ballyroan

Profound Beauty barely came out of second gear to make it six wins from eight starts at Leopardstown.

Dermot Weld's mare was sent straight to the front in her bid to defend her ITM/Springpaarden Fonds Ballyroan Stakes, and she had a couple of her rivals toiling before the turn for home.

That left Akzar as the last horse in contention as they approached the furlong marker, but Profound Beauty (4-11) responded to well to a quick push from Pat Smullen, who had time to look round and pat the super mare on the neck before recording a three-length success.

Alexander Pope (4-5) got the better of a titanic battle with A Word Apart to land the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden.

A Word Apart made a bold bid from the front, but Johnny Murtagh inched Alexander Pope into a share of the lead and just edged the verdict by a short head.

Murtagh made it a quick double when guiding Finicius (6-1) to victory in the second race of the card, the Dodder Handicap.

Jembatt led the field into the final furlong, only to find Dotada sweep past, but Murtagh had the final say as he flew down the outside to finish one and a quarter lengths ahead.

Murtagh made it three when Amber Grey returned to action with victory in the "Alabama 3" Maiden.

Drawn wide on the outside of the 17-runner field, the 3-1 chance broke swiftly, allowing Murtagh to angle him towards the rail.

That move proved decisive, as he never saw another horse, keeping up the gallop in game fashion to hold Saajidah two lengths at bay, with favourite Stephen's Green third.

Simla Sunset finished with a flourish under Sean Levey to run out a half-length winner over Skyway in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap.
