Brian Meehan landed the last Group One of the season in Britain as Crowded House came with a scything run down the outside to win the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.
Jamie Spencer looked confident on the eventual winner with two furlongs to run as 2-1 favourite Jukebox Jury made his bid.
However, Spencer found himself short of room and had to switch his mount to make a challenge around a wall of horses.
When in the clear he quickened up impressively but veered violently to his left, hampering stablemate Skanky Biscuit who finished third.
The 7-1 chance beat the jolly by a long-looking three-and-a-half lengths and was handed a 14-1 quote for the Derby by totesport and William Hill.
Spencer said: ‘He's a smasher. He was fresh going down with me. I planned to be bang there but I had to change it because of that. It's just that he's fresh and he wants better ground.
‘When he did get out I didn't even have to get after him. I gave him a tap, I didn't show him the whip, and he went a little left. He's a class horse,’ he said.
Meehan said: ‘He looks good, he looks a serious horse, he did it so well.
‘He was probably always getting there. In the Sales race at Newmarket, we had to go for the money but it was obviously a furlong too short.
‘He looked very impressive here today and he's a very classy horse, everything about him is good.
‘I guess he is one of the last Rainbow Quest's, there were a few left at the sales last week but he looks very good.
‘It's good Skanky Biscuit was third too, he's very progressive. To come from a maiden and run in a race like this and run so well is great.’
Deirdre Johnston, wife of Jukebox Jury's trainer Mark Johnston, said: ‘He reared in the stalls when they opened which meant he was slowly away but that is perhaps no bad thing being tucked away behind the wind.
‘He was fighting out a good finish with the other horse (Skanky Biscuit) when the winner came across us but he did go on and win by three and half lengths.
‘He's run a good solid race, but when you're favourite for a Group One One race you like to win. We look forward to next year with him now and we'll discuss the options over the winter.’
