Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide retired

Funny Cide, winner of the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has been retired at the age of seven.

The Barclay Tagg-trained gelding won the Wadsworth Memorial Handicap at Finger Lake earlier in the month but connections have decided to call time on his 38-race career.

Tagg said: ‘We decided that after the great fun and excitement of watching Funny Cide win at Finger Lakes at the age of seven, it would be a good note on which to retire the horse.

‘He had tremendous three-year-old and four-year-old seasons and won stakes every year, except his five-year-old year.

‘We'll probably keep him at the track for a while, and either Robin (Smullen, assistant trainer) or I will ride him out to the track with the sets each morning.

‘He'll continue to be pampered, just as he's been his entire career.

‘We're all thrilled to be able to retire him sound and happy,’ Tagg told www.bloodhorse.com.

Funny Cide won 11 times in his career, including a success in the 2004 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont, and amassed well over £2million in prize money.
