Sakhee's winning July Cup secret

Sakhee's Secret defied his relative inexperience to win the Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

Hughie Morrison's charge, sent off a 9-2 chance, was brought with a well-timed run by Steve Drowne and the pair hit the front shortly after entering the final furlong.

Peter Chapple-Hyam's Dutch Art (5-1) flew home to finish a half-length second, while the Barry Hills-trained Red Clubs was a further one and a quarter lengths away in third.

South African raider Drayton burst out of the gates and set a scorching pace up front in company with the Tracey Collins-trained Dandy Man.

The first-named gave way with around two furlongs left to run and Dandy Man briefly took over at the head of affairs.

However, Drowne then asked his mount to quicken and Sakhee's Secret found an impressive response to grab the initiative on entering the distance.

Dutch Art also came with an eyecatching run but never quite looked like getting to grips with the winner, who saw out the six-furlong trip very well up the final incline.

Red Clubs ran well to take third, while French raider Marchand D'Or came from an unpromising position to finish fourth.

Drowne said afterwards: 'He gave me a great ride, he settled and he's done everything for me. He just had to wait for a gap. He's travelled and when you've got a horse like this, you know you've got the engine to get in the holes.

'I've always had a lot of faith that he's got the ability. He's a three year-old and an inexperienced one against veterans. He's a youngster and lucky enough he had the guns for them. He's as good as I've ridden.'

Morrison added: 'He stuck his neck out and he's obviously brilliant. It's one for Bridget Swire, a staunch supporter for years. It gives everybody hope and isn't it wonderful?'
