Red Evie showed real determination to snatch a thrilling victory in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
Michael Bell's 8-1 scorer was covered up early but made good progress to lay down a challenge as the field entered the final furlong.
Godolphin's Ramonti and French raider Passager applied pressure on either side but Red Evie was not to be denied and stuck her neck out to score in brave fashion.
Ramonti grabbed second, while Passager had to settle for third.
Speciosa was soon ushered into an early lead and ensured there was a decent gallop to this much-coveted Group One Prize.
However, Pam Sly's filly sent out the distress signals with over two furlongs to run as Ramonti nosed into a narrow lead.
Frankie Dettori's mount, sent off at 4-1, was keen enough throughout the early stages but still found an impressive turn of foot at the business end.
Passager was always hot on his heels with the eventual winner, however, and that trio settled down to scrap it out inside the distance.
Red Evie snatched a definite advantage soon after but could not shake off the attentions of her pursuers, who pressed her all the way to the line.
Sir Michael Stoute's 11-8 favourite Peeress moved into a challenging position approaching the two-furlong pole, but failed to find the required turn of foot to get competitive.
By contrast, the winner stayed on in good style to defeat Ramonti by a head, with Passager the same distance away in third.
‘She's so tough,’ Spencer told Channel 4 Racing.
‘It was disappointing when she got beat on her last run last year but everyone is allowed an off-day.
‘She does nothing at home but I knew after two furlongs that we were in business.
‘I probably got there a tad too soon but she was pulling up a little bit towards the end.
‘She's a good mare,’ said Spencer.
