Aran seeks Punchestown upturn

Aran Concerto could restore his lofty reputation in the €110,000 Land Rover Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown on 27 April.

Noel Meade's highly-regarded six-year-old failed to justify favouritism in the Ballymore Properties Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham last month and a recovery mission remains firmly on the cards.

'He just didn't settle and didn't jump at Cheltenham,' Meade said.

'Tony (McCoy) said that he ran very babyish and was never happy. He thought that a faster-run race would have suited him better and he suggested that he might have been better suited by the two-mile race.

'The horse seems well and Punchestown is the plan but I haven't decided yet whether he'll go for the Land Rover Champion Novice Hurdle or the two-mile race (vcbet.com Champion Novice Hurdle).
"We'll see how it goes closer to the day and what the ground's like before making a decision.'

While Aran Concerto is not a definite for the longer option, Meade is sure to be well represented in the race.

'Leading Run may go for the Land Rover Champion Novice Hurdle,' he added.

'He's in good form and seems to be well. He likes good ground and maybe two and a half miles will suit him better than three.
Aitmatov and Casey Jones are in there and are both horses who I think will like the better ground.'

Also among a 73-strong entry in the Grade One contest is Aran Concerto's Cheltenham conqueror Massini's Maguire, who could be joined by fellow Festival scorers Wichita Lineman and Ebaziyan.
