Clerigo on course for Chepstow

Mount Clerigo is all set to go for gold in the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow on Wednesday.

Victor Dartnall's eight-year-old has not been seen since falling at Wetherby last time but having emerged unscathed, his Brayford handler is looking forward to getting him back on track.

'He's on course for the Welsh National if he gets in, and I think he probably will,' he said.

'The race has been in mind for a while as he'll be going for some of the long-distance staying handicap chases this season and that's the first one really.

'He was OK after his fall at Wetherby and you'd think the stamina test will suit him.'

Mount Clerigo has not won since November last year, but having only graced the racecourse on 14 occasions, Dartnall hopes he can find a little more improvement.

'He's lightly-raced and he's a big horse and he's not that old yet,' he added.

'He's got to jump round first of course. I don't really know why he fell last time - I think it was just one of those things as he's usually pretty safe.'
